Questions to Ask Your Wedding Videographer Before Booking

Before booking a wedding videographer, ask about four things in order: what exactly is delivered, how audio is captured, what their backup plan is, and what the contract covers. Most post-wedding disappointment with video comes from assumptions — couples who expected the full speeches and got a three-minute highlight reel, or expected to hear their vows and got music over silent footage. Every question below exists because someone didn't ask it.

About the Films You'll Receive

How long is the highlight film, and can we see full examples? Highlight films typically run 3–6 minutes. Ask to watch complete delivered films — not showreels — from real weddings, ideally at a venue or lighting situation similar to yours. A showreel is the best 40 seconds of a career; a full film shows you what you'll actually receive.

Is the full ceremony recorded and delivered? Some packages include a full ceremony and speeches edit; others charge for it as an add-on; some don't record them in full at all. If hearing your entire vows and every speech matters to you, get this in writing.

How is the film edited — and who chooses the music? Ask whether music is properly licensed (it affects whether you can share the film online) and how much input you have on song choice and the overall feel.

Is raw footage available? Most videographers don't include raw footage by default — it's unedited, ungraded and enormous. But if having every minute of coverage matters to you, ask what it costs now, not after the wedding.

About Sound

This deserves its own section because it's the single biggest quality gap between amateur and professional wedding video. Ask: How do you capture the vows and speeches?

The right answer involves lapel mics on the celebrant and partners, a backup recorder, and a feed from the venue's sound desk where one exists. If the answer is "the camera's microphone," walk away — wind, distance and crowd noise will bury the most important words of the day, and no edit can recover them.

About Logistics and Backups

Will it be you filming, and how many shooters? Confirm who is actually turning up. A second shooter means both partners' prep gets covered and the ceremony gets multiple angles.

What happens if you're sick on the day? A professional has a network of trusted shooters and a plan. "That's never happened" is not a plan.

What's your backup equipment situation? Dual card slots, spare cameras, spare audio. Weddings can't be reshot; gear redundancy is non-negotiable.

Do you fly a drone, and can you at our venue? Drone rules depend on airspace and venue policy — a professional will know or find out, rather than promising aerial shots they may not legally be able to capture.

About the Business Side

What's the payment and cancellation structure? Deposit, balance timing, and what happens if the wedding moves — postponements are normal now, and the policy should be in the contract.

Do you have public liability insurance? Many venues require it; every professional has it.
