Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Before booking a wedding photographer, ask about four things in order: what a full gallery actually looks like, how your images are backed up, what editing and delivery involves, and what's written into the contract. Most disappointment after the wedding traces back to an assumption nobody checked out loud — an editing style heavier than expected, or a gallery that arrives months later than hoped. Every question below exists because someone didn't ask it.

About the Photos You'll Receive

Can we see a full wedding gallery, not just highlights? A highlight reel or Instagram grid is the best 30 images from a career. A full gallery — ceremony, speeches, the in-between moments, the last dance — shows you what you'll actually get, including how they handle the parts that aren't naturally photogenic.

How many edited photos will we receive, and how are they chosen? Numbers vary widely by coverage length and studio. Get a range in writing so there's no surprise when the gallery lands.

What's your editing style, and is it flexible? Warm and film-like, true-to-colour, moody and contrast-heavy — styles differ, and it's harder to change after the fact than most couples expect. If you love a specific look, confirm it's their default, not a one-off edit for their portfolio.

Are RAW files available? Most photographers don't include unedited RAW files by default. If having every frame matters to you, ask what it costs before the wedding, not after.

About Backups and Equipment

How many camera bodies do you bring? A wedding can't be reshot, so redundancy matters — dual card slots, spare bodies, spare lenses.

What happens if you're sick on the day? A professional has a network and a plan. "That's never happened to us" is not a plan.

Will there be a second photographer? A second shooter covers both partners getting ready and gives the ceremony multiple angles at once — ask whether it's included or an add-on.

Have you worked with our videographer before? Two vendors who've never met are negotiating the same three feet of space during your first kiss. If your photographer and videographer are one team — like at Vantirra, where photo and video are handled together — this question disappears entirely.

About Editing and Delivery

What's the turnaround time — in the contract? Industry turnaround ranges from six weeks to six months. Whatever the number, it should be written down. (At Vantirra, photos and highlight film are delivered within four weeks.)

What format are the final files delivered in, and are prints or albums included? Confirm whether you're getting a private online gallery, a download, or a physical delivery — and whether albums are included or a separate cost.

Who owns the copyright? Most New Zealand wedding photographers retain copyright and grant a personal-use license — standard practice, but worth confirming what you can and can't do with your own photos (printing, social media, competitions).

About the Business Side

What's the payment and cancellation structure? Deposit, balance timing, and what happens if the date moves — postponements are common enough now that the policy should be in the contract, not a verbal promise.

Do you have public liability insurance? Many venues require it before they'll let a vendor on site; every professional studio carries it.

Red Flags to Walk Away From

No full galleries available to view — only highlight reels. Vague answers about how many edited photos you'll receive. No written contract, or a contract with no delivery date. No backup plan for illness or gear failure. A price dramatically below market — for what wedding photography actually costs in Auckland and why, see our pricing guide.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book a wedding photographer?
Established studios book 9–18 months ahead for summer Saturday dates in Auckland. If your date falls in peak season, start conversations as soon as the venue is locked in.

Should we meet the photographer before booking?
Yes — at least a video call. They'll spend more time with you on the day than almost anyone else at your wedding, so personality fit genuinely affects how relaxed you look in the photos.

What's the most important question of all?
"Can we see three full galleries from real weddings?" Style, consistency, editing taste, and how they handle the unscripted moments are all visible in the answer.
